After flights were delayed at a few airports around the country, social media channels were flooded with recordings of passengers demanding their 'rights. Weather factors, a lack of crew, and a lack of planes are all reasons for delays. As a result, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has released compensation guidelines for passengers.

What report suggest?

According to a report published by the Hindustan Times, airlines reimbursed around 2.69 lakh passengers for flight delays, 40,000 passengers for cancellations, and 1,231 passengers for denied boarding.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, titled "Facilities to be offered to passengers by airlines due to denied boarding, cancellation of flights, and delays in flights. This requirement requires the airline to assist the affected passengers as a result of the flight cancellation and delay.

What are the guidelines issued for passengers?

  • The airline must initially seek volunteers to give up their tickets if there is an overbooking of seats. If the passenger refuses to board, the airline will need to arrange a substitute flight within one hour of the original scheduled departure time.
  • The government stated that in the event of a cancellation, the airlines will either offer a replacement flight or pay additional expenses in addition to the full refund of the ticket. While waiting for an alternative aircraft, the airline will also serve meals and refreshments to passengers who have already checked in for their initial trip at the airport.
  • Depending on the length of the flight delay, the airline must offer meals and refreshments, an alternative flight, a complete refund of the passenger's ticket, or hotel accommodations (including transfers).
  • If this isn't feasible, the airline will have to reimburse the customer 200% of the one-way ticket that was booked plus the airline fuel surcharge, which is limited to INR 10,000 if the trip is scheduled within the next 24 hours.
  • The penalty rises to 400% of the scheduled one-way fare plus the airline fuel charge and remains capped at INR 20,000 if the alternative flight is offered more than 24 hours after the scheduled departure time.
