Mizoram Assembly Elections: Vote Counting Commences for 40 Seats

The tallying of ballots for the Mizoram assembly's 40 seats kicked off on Monday morning.The counting process commenced at 8 am, with the initial half-hour dedicated to the counting of postal ballots, as confirmed by a senior official from the election commission.

As per the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Mizoram, the counting is distributed across 13 centers and 40 halls throughout the state.

The setup includes 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables in the 40 counting halls, with nearly 4000 personnel engaged in the vote counting process, according to the state election commission.

In the aftermath of the saffron wave in the Hindi heartland and significant political shifts, the spotlight now turns to the Northeast as Mizoram prepares to unveil its mandate on Monday.

Originally scheduled for December 3, the counting in Mizoram was postponed by a day following representations to the Election Commission citing the religious significance of Sunday in the Christian-majority state.

Responding to appeals from political parties and civil society groups, the Election Commission officially announced the deferment of the vote counting in Mizoram to Monday on November 29.

Four key contenders vied for victory in the northeastern state during the elections held on November 7: the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), Congress, and BJP.

On Sunday, Lalduhoma, the chief ministerial candidate of ZPM, expressed confidence in the party forming a 'stable' government, citing reliable exit poll predictions released on Thursday.

Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar confirmed that all arrangements for the vote counting on December 4 have been completed.

Exit polls project MNF and ZPM as the main contenders to form the government in Mizoram, with a potential hung assembly. Chief Minister Zoramthanga, leading the ruling party, is seen as having an advantage in the Northeast state.

Chief Electoral Officer Madhup Vyas explained that the Election Commission acceded to the request for vote counting deferment due to Sunday being dedicated to church duties and prayers.

On the eve of the Mizoram Assembly Elections' vote counting, Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Lalduhoma, the chief ministerial face of ZPM, attended special prayers at different churches in Mizoram.
