The collapse of a railway bridge during a party event in Mizoram has resulted in 18 confirmed deaths thus far. The bridge, identified as number 196 and located near the Sairang Village, is situated approximately 21 kilometers from the state capital Aizwal. The news of this tragic incident emerged on Wednesday.

The Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the Mizoram Government has reported that relief and rescue efforts were promptly initiated. District administration officials, local authorities, and the police collaborated to conduct the rescue operation.

Pu Lalchamliana, the Minister of Disaster Management and Relief, conveyed his sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences.

According to government sources, 18 bodies have been recovered, and during the course of the rescue operation, three individuals were found injured. The rescue operation was executed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Quick Response Team (QRT), who successfully rescued an injured worker from atop a pillar.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed his grief regarding the incident and declared ex gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured.

This rail bridge was a component of a larger project aimed at linking all eight northeastern states of India to the national railway network.

The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to the railways to facilitate their transportation to their respective homes.

The government has initiated a comprehensive investigation to delve into the incident.

Furthermore, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each deceased individual.
