Modi government extends ban on SIMI under UAPA for five more years

The Ministry of Home Affairs took to social media to make the official announcement. In a tweet, the office stated, "Bolstering PM @narendramodi Ji's vision of zero tolerance against terrorism, ‘Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)’ has been declared as an 'Unlawful Association' for a further period of five years under the UAPA." The statement also highlighted SIMI's alleged involvement in fomenting terrorism and disturbing peace, emphasizing the organization's threat to the integrity of the nation.
History of SIMI's Ban
The government initially declared SIMI as an 'unlawful association' on February 1, 2014, citing its agenda to convert India into an Islamic nation. Founded in 1977 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, with Mohammad Ahmadullah Siddiqi as its founding president, SIMI has faced multiple bans since its first outlawing in 2001. The ban was previously extended for five years in 2019.

Involvement in Terrorist Activities
SIMI has been linked to various terrorist incidents in India, including the notorious Bhopal jailbreak in 2014, the M Chinnawamy stadium blast in Bengaluru in the same year, and the Gaya blasts in 2017. The organization's members have been implicated in carrying out attacks that pose a threat to the nation's security.

Operating in multiple states across the country, SIMI's presence has been noted in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and parts of Gujarat. The government's decision to extend the ban underscores the ongoing efforts to curb the influence and activities of SIMI throughout the nation.
