For all Indian cricket fans, the number holds great value as it was the jersey number of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, or as all cricket fans call him, Captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that jersey number 7 is being retired.

No one can wear Number 7

Retiring a jersey number means that the number will not be available for any player to choose from. No player can wear this jersey number in the future of Indian cricket.

BCCI has taken this step in honor of the former captain MS Dhoni and honor his contribution to the game of cricket in India.

It has been 3 years since MS Dhoni has retired from international cricket.

Dhoni will be the second player

MS Dhoni has become the second player in India to be given this honor. The God of Cricket- Sachin Tendulkar was the first-ever cricketer in India whose Jersey Number 10 was retired.  Sachin Tendulkar's iconic jersey number 10 was forever taken out of the choice of other players in 2017.

The young players of the Indian cricket team have been informed to not take the numbers 7 and 10 as they have been retired.  A senior official said “The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers."

This limits the number available for players to choose from even though players can choose any number between 1-100.  “At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don’t give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from.”

Thala for a reason

The timing of this decision by BCCI could have been better as Indian social media users have been sharing memes on Dhoni's jersey number 7 for the past few weeks.
