In a heart-wrenching turn of events, 24 lives, including 12 innocent infants, were lost in just 24 hours at the Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the glaring healthcare negligence that plagues our nation and should compel us to question the state of our healthcare system and the priorities of our government.

The very essence of a civilized society is its ability to protect its most vulnerable members. In this case, infants, the epitome of vulnerability, were left to fend for themselves in an environment that should have provided them with care, comfort, and hope. Instead, their lives were cut short due to what can only be described as a monumental failure on the part of the authorities responsible for their well-being.

The fact that a similar tragedy occurred just two months ago in Kalwa Hospital of Thane Municipal Corporation should have set off alarm bells. But it appears that these warnings went unheeded, and the same mistakes were repeated. This is not a failure of the healthcare system alone; it's a failure of governance, accountability, and the very essence of humanity.

Opposition leaders, including Sharad Pawar and Rahul Gandhi, have rightfully raised their voices in condemnation. They have called out the Eknath Shinde government for what can only be termed as criminal negligence. They have questioned the allocation of funds, pointing out the paradox of a government that spends extravagantly on self-promotion but fails to provide basic medicines for children. It's a damning indictment of misplaced priorities.

The establishment of a three-member expert committee to investigate the incident is a step in the right direction, but it's not nearly enough. What we need is a profound overhaul of our healthcare system, a commitment to patient safety, and a government that places the lives of its citizens above all else.

Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT) has rightly called this incident "murder due to absolute negligence." It's time for us to acknowledge that negligence at this level is a crime, and those responsible must be held accountable. Strict action should be taken against those who allowed this tragedy to occur, and compensation should be provided to the families who have suffered immeasurable loss.

As the investigations continue, we must demand more than just answers. We must demand change. We must demand a healthcare system that is robust, responsive, and compassionate. We must demand a government that prioritizes the lives of its citizens over political agendas and self-interest.

This tragedy is not an isolated incident. It's a reflection of a systemic issue that plagues healthcare institutions across the country. Overburdened hospital, understaffed facilities, and a chronic shortage of essential medicines have become the norm rather than the exception. The blame for these failings cannot be shifted onto one person or party; it's a collective failure of our society to prioritize the health and well-being of its citizens.
