A day after bidding adieu to the old Parliament building, Members of Parliament (MPs) convened in the new facility for the remainder of the special session. Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the session by acknowledging the emotional significance of leaving the old premises. He paid tribute to India's democratic heritage, highlighting the contributions of former prime ministers such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Manmohan Singh. Modi envisioned the colonial-era structure remaining a timeless source of inspiration and pilgrimage.

This special parliamentary session is scheduled to run until Friday, with discussions on up to eight bills on the agenda. On Monday, Minister of State Prahlad Singh Patel briefly posted on social media about Cabinet approval of the Women's Reservation Bill, calling for a 33% quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The bill had previously passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010.

The Congress welcomed the Cabinet's decision to introduce the Women's Reservation Bill during this special session, citing an old letter from Rahul Gandhi expressing 'unconditional support' for the bill.

Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Modi chaired a cabinet meeting in the Parliament House Annexe, as both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day. The new Parliament building will host their sessions starting Tuesday.

Prime Minister Modi's poignant speech marked the beginning of the special session, underscoring the enduring significance of the colonial-era building, which will continue to inspire and be a place of reverence.

India is now poised for a new era of democracy and legislative progress in its new parliamentary home.
