Australia poised to purchase missile systems from the US in a deal worth $975 million
In recent years, the United States and Australia have strengthened their military cooperation as they work together to counter the growing assertiveness of China's military presence. The Biden administration has revealed its intention to sell advanced weaponry systems to Australia in a deal worth up to $975 million, signifying an effort to enhance their alliance and address China's expanding military influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Australia has announced its intention to procure 22 sets of the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System from Lockheed Martin Corp. The country also plans to acquire 60 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and a variety of other munitions, as stated by the State Department's recent announcement on Friday. The sale is subject to approval from the US Congress, and contract negotiations remain to be finalized.
The State Department explained, "Australia will utilize this capability to reinforce its domestic defense and provide enhanced security for vital infrastructure. The proposed sale of these equipment and support services will not disrupt the fundamental military balance in the region."
As China's military presence becomes more assertive and well-funded, the United States and Australia have taken steps to deepen their military ties. In July, Washington and Canberra jointly announced plans to expand the US military presence in Australia, including increased visits from US submarines and collaborative efforts in guided missile production.
A significant upcoming event in the partnership is President Joe Biden's planned meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in October. Biden had previously postponed a trip to Australia in May due to ongoing negotiations in Washington related to the US debt ceiling.
