Biden Discusses Nijjar's Murder in Canada with PM Modi During G20 Meeting: Report

According to the report, during the recent G20 summit, U.S. President Joe Biden and leaders from other nations reportedly expressed their concerns to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Canadian allegations that New Delhi had involvement in the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. The Financial Times reported this development, citing information from three individuals familiar with the summit discussions. The report has stated that The Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, comprised of the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, collectively addressed the matter with Modi.

The White House had not immediately responded to requests for comment on the FT report. The G20 summit took place in India shortly before Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly made allegations about the case in an address to the Canadian parliament.

Canada had urged its allies to engage with Modi on the issue at the G20 summit, leading to the intervention by several world leaders. Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, confirmed that the U.S. had been in high-level communication with Indian officials following Canada's accusations. Sullivan emphasized that the U.S. was not affording India any "special exemption" in this matter. India promptly rejected Canada's allegations, deeming them "absurd." This crisis strained Canada-India relations, leading India to suspend new visa issuance for Canadians and requesting Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India.

This situation has placed certain Western nations in a delicate position. While Canada has long been a steadfast partner and ally, these countries are simultaneously working to strengthen their ties with New Delhi to counter China's influence in the Asia Pacific region. The complex diplomatic dynamics surrounding the Nijjar murder case have underscored the challenges of maintaining relationships amid shifting global dynamics and allegations of international involvement in sensitive matters.
