Elon Musk Suggests Twitter May Become a Paid Service, Imposing Fees for All Users
Elon Musk, in a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, hinted at major changes for Twitter, now referred to as "X." He suggested that in the near future, all X users might be required to pay a monthly fee to access the platform. This move aims to address the issue of fake accounts or bots.
The specific fee amount and the benefits for paying users were not disclosed by Musk, as reported by CNBC. During the conversation, Musk shared some statistics about X, indicating it now boasts 550 million monthly users who generate between 100 to 200 million daily posts.
While the primary purpose of Musk's discussion with Netanyahu was to explore the potential risks of advanced technology and its regulation, Musk also addressed criticisms that X has allowed hate speech and anti-Semitism on its platform.
Musk has faced scrutiny from civil rights organizations for not taking sufficient action against hate speech and anti-Semitic content on X. He even raised the possibility of suing the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), although no lawsuit has been filed to date, and the ADL has not provided an immediate response.
Musk's acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion led to significant changes, including the reinstatement of previously banned accounts, such as former President Donald Trump's. He also removed the "blue check" verification system for identifying notable accounts.
Under Musk's leadership, X introduced a subscription-based model where paying users receive a blue badge next to their name and increased post visibility, while non-subscribers may experience reduced post engagement. This approach aims to discourage bot usage on the platform.
Additionally, X is pursuing licenses to become a money transmitter in the United States and has already obtained approval in eight states, as indicated by public records.
