Is China and N.Korean making Japan increase defense spending
Japanese defence ministry has requested the finance Ministry of Japan to increase the budget of defence spending to over 13% in 2024 compared to spending of previous year. The ministry has requested a budget of ¥7.7 trillion ($52.6 billion).
According to reports this spending will bring Japan at par with European countries like France in terms of defence spending for 2022.
China and North Korea
This move by japan comes recently disturbed relations with China over releasing treated Radioactive water into the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea. China strongly stood against the move by banning Japanese seafood. Chinese people have also started boycotting Japanese product whether it is skincare or daily use items. This fire is being fueled by Chinese government who want to pit the country against Japan.
China's military capabilities are far ahead to that of Japan. China has also been constantly aggressive in the neighborhood by disturbing Taiwan again and again. Japan wants to increase it's defence capabilities due to this reason and also because there is no certainty when it comes to China.
North Korean on the other side is also a very uncertain country with a large backup of nuclear weapons. N. Korea has been testing missiles continuously, and since Japan is close to N. Korea, the fear from these actions is justified, as Japan does not have cordial relations with N. Korea as well.
The ongoing Russian and Ukraine war has made the world realize that wars are not a thing of past, it is better that a country is able to protect and defend itself.
Last year Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised that Japan will increase it's military spending to 60% over the course of 5 years, and this is one step towards achieving that.
What will Japan get from this funding?
3 Landing ships, 17 transport helicopter, fighter jets and specialized transport team to improve deployment and interceptive missiles which will counter hypersonic warheads. Some of these things will be produced in collaboration with USA, Britain and Italy.
