Report: Imran Khan's Nephew to Face Military Court Trial for May 9 Violence in Pakistan

Hassaan Khan Niazi, the nephew of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been transferred to military custody for trial regarding his alleged involvement in the violence that erupted on May 9, as reported by Dawn on Friday.

Hassaan is suspected of being the main perpetrator in the attack on Jinnah House during the violent events in Lahore on May 9, which were triggered following the arrest of the chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party.

Hassaan was apprehended by the police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and later, as per the commanding officer's request, transferred to the military's custody.

Hassaan Niazi, who also serves as the party chief's focal person on legal matters, was transferred to the Quetta police custody on August 1, a day after being arrested late Sunday night in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His father, Hafeezullah Khan, confirmed this development on his social media account.

However, the specific charges under which Hassaan was detained remain undisclosed, according to The News International. Earlier statements from the police indicated his involvement in the May 9 riots and the attack on sensitive military installations, particularly Jinnah House (Lahore's Corps Commander House).

Hassaan's father submitted a petition in pursuit of his son's retrieval, urging for his presentation in front of the court. During the hearing, Additional Advocate General Ghulam Sarwar Nahang submitted a police report to Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmed of the High Court.

Nahang apprised the court of Hassaan's military tribunal proceedings and the subsequent transfer of custody to the army. The court also requested that Hassaan be allowed to meet his parents, prompting the law officer to inform them about the meeting's scheduling.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan, the ousted prime minister, is incarcerated at Attock Jail. He was found guilty by an Islamabad trial court of concealing proceeds from gifts received through Toshakhana (state depository) during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. The court sentenced him to three years in prison along with a fine of PKR 100,000.

Consequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified him from holding public office for five years following his conviction.
