Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has called on the Seattle Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula with the utmost seriousness. Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old Indian graduate student, was killed in a collision with a police car traveling at 74 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone.

Krishnamoorthi strongly condemned a recording in which a Seattle police officer was heard making light of Jaahnavi Kandula's death and questioning the value of her life. He emphasized that her loss should not be diminished or mocked, urging the Seattle Police Department to treat the investigation with the gravity it deserves.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a student at Washington's Northeastern University, was struck at a pedestrian crossing on January 23, 2023. In the video, the officer, Daniel Auderer, can be heard saying, 'Yeah, just write a check. USD 11,000. She was 26 anyway; she had limited value.'

The National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA) issued a unanimous resolution, calling for a prioritized investigation, community engagement, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals involved.

Indian American Impact expressed its shock at the footage of a Seattle police officer belittling the victim's life and called for accountability and justice for Jaahnavi Kandula's family.

Indian American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing the need to address xenophobia and racism that normalizes such behavior.

Public outrage has grown following the release of the recording, with a coalition, including family members of individuals killed by police, objecting to the officer's comments. The incident highlights concerns about the attitudes of some police officers toward the people they are sworn to protect.
