32 Political Parties Support Maratha Reservation following All-Party Meeting
Leaders representing 32 political parties have thrown their weight behind the reservation for the Maratha community in Maharashtra, pledging to collaboratively work towards its realization. The announcement came during an all-party meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
A signed resolution from the meeting emphasized the urgency of the Maratha reservation issue, but also highlighted the need for time and careful consideration.
The gathering was convened in response to the recent violent protests calling for reservation benefits for all Marathas within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The resolution expressed disappointment in the violent turn of events, tarnishing the peaceful nature of the agitation. It called on protesters not to resort to unlawful activities and urged activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, who has been on a hunger strike advocating for the cause, to cooperate. The attending leaders also requested Jarange-Patil to end his strike.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, during his role as the meeting's chair, appealed to the Maratha community to grant the government more time to address their concerns. He voiced concerns about the changing nature of the protests, which have generated a sense of insecurity among the public. Shinde's appeal for cooperation was echoed by the attending leaders. He said “The agitation has taken a new turn that has led to a sense of insecurity among the people. We appeal Maratha community and Jarange-Patil to cooperate with the government."
Prominent political figures, including Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, participated in the meeting where they endorsed the government's stance and actions against those involved in the violent incidents.
Jarange-Patil, while expressing his readiness for dialogue, insisted that the government should provide firm assurances. "They should tell us what type of reservation they will give us and in how many days," he urged.
