The epicenter was at latitude 12.34 south and longitude 166.46 east, with a depth of only 10 kilometers. The location is approximately 643 km north-northwest (NNW) of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.
No damage has been reported at this time, but authorities are monitoring the situation. Experts say that earthquakes closer to the surface are more dangerous.
