7.0 earthquake hits remote wilderness along Alaska-Canada border

Although there are no reports of any loss of life or property due to the earthquake, the high intensity has certainly caused panic among the people. About 20 aftershocks were felt after the earthquake. The earthquake tremors were felt at 2:11 AM Indian Standard Time.

People are terrified after 20 back-to-back aftershocks following the main tremor.

Earthquake occurred in Yukon, Canada, and Yakutat, Alaska

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred approximately 370 kilometers northwest of Alaska and 250 kilometers west of Whitehorse, Yukon. It was approximately 91 kilometers from Yakutat, Alaska, which has a population of 662 according to the USGS. According to the information, the seismic waves originated from a depth of 10 kilometers below the earth's surface.

No Tsunami Threat

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 km, and there were several smaller aftershocks. Despite the strong tremors, officials have not reported any tsunami threat. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Weather Service confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the West Coast or surrounding coastal areas from this event.

Why earthquakes are common on the Canada-Alaska Border

According to a NASA report, an average of about 18 major earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 to 7.9 occur every year on the Canada-Alaska border, while an earthquake of magnitude 8 or more also occurs in this area once a year. The Canadian community closest to the earthquake's epicenter is Haines Junction, located approximately 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the epicenter. According to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, it has a population of 1018 and is situated on the coast.
