Why are earthquakes frequent in Afghanistan?
Afghanistan is located in the Hindu Kush region, an active plate tectonic zone where the Indian plate collides with the Eurasian plate. In the last 10 years, 10 earthquakes within a 300-kilometer radius have had magnitudes above 6.0. In 2015, a deadly magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck. In 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed 1,500 people.
Why do earthquakes occur?
There are seven tectonic plates within the Earth. When these tectonic plates collide along fault lines, friction is generated and energy is released. This is why earthquakes are felt on Earth.
