Amazon, Flipkart: BIS raids warehouses of e-commerce distributors; seizes fake products

Amazon, Flipkart: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has raided major e-commerce distributors in Delhi and seized thousands of substandard products. In this operation that lasted more than 15 hours, the BIS team seized a large number of products from the warehouse of Amazon Sellers Private Limited located in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, Delhi.

According to the report of media agency more than 3,500 products were seized in this raid conducted on March 19. These included geysers, food mixers and other electronic equipment.

During the investigation, it was found that many of these products were either without the mandatory ISI mark or were being sold with fake ISI labels. The total estimated value of these seized goods is said to be around Rs 70 lakh.

 Raid in Flipkart's warehouse too

BIS officials also raided the warehouse of Flipkart's subsidiary Instacart Services Private Limited located in Trinagar, Delhi. A large stock of sports footwear was recovered from here, which was not meeting the ISI standards. In this raid, about 590 pairs of sports shoes were seized, whose estimated value was Rs 6 lakh.

BIS officials found that neither these shoes had ISI mark, nor the correct information of the manufacturing date was given.

Nationwide action

BIS has conducted several similar raids across India in recent times. In the last one-month, similar operations were also carried out in cities like Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow and Sriperumbudur, in which substandard and fake products were seized.

According to BIS rules, mandatory certification is required for 769 products in India. Manufacturing, importing, selling, renting, storing or displaying these products without license or certification (CoC) is completely prohibited.

BIS also taken action in Tamil Nadu

Last week, BIS raided the warehouses of Amazon and Flipkart in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. During this, a large quantity of products was seized which were being sold without mandatory certification. 3,376 products were seized at Amazon's Puduvoyal warehouse.

These included insulated flasks, food containers, metallic portable water bottles, ceiling fans and toys. All these products did not have the BIS standard mark, and their total value was estimated at Rs 36 lakh.

Summary

While Flipkart's Koduvally warehouse was also raided, from where 286 packs of baby diapers, 36 box casseroles, 26 stainless steel water bottles and 10 insulated steel bottles were seized. All these products were being sold without BIS certification.
