Amit Shah explains shift from Sedition to Treason and key changes in proposed Bills
India is making big changes to its laws, specifically to the law of Sedition. Amit Shah, the Home Minister, talked about them. The new laws, called Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023, are replacing old ones like the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and others.
Less Trouble for Speaking Out
Amit Shah shared that now people can criticize the government without getting into trouble. But, if someone messes with the country's flag, security, or property, they might go to jail. He said "The law of treason made by the British has ended, and now the country's security is paramount. Anyone can say anything against the government, but if someone interferes with the country's flag, security, or property, they will go to jail."
Making Things Faster and Safer
He talked about some important changes. Now, legal papers have to be filed within 180 days, and a judge needs to start looking at the case within 14 days. This, he said, will make the legal process faster. The focus is on dealing with crimes that harm people, the country's borders, and the voting process.
New Definition for Terrorism
For the first time, Shah said, the government is making a clear definition of terrorism. He explained that now, being against the country's unity and safety would be considered terrorism.
Listening to Suggestions
Before making these changes, Amit Shah said the government listened to a lot of suggestions—from judges, police officers, and many others.
More Safety Measures
The new laws also make sure that the police keep track of information about people they arrest. The government cannot drop a case without talking to the person who was hurt. Victims will get updates on their case within 90 days.
Stronger Punishments for Serious Crimes
For serious crimes, like hurting kids or threatening the country's safety, the punishments are stronger. Those who do really bad things won't get mercy.
Faster Trials for People Hiding Abroad
Amit Shah talked about a new rule that will help in cases where criminals hide in other countries. If they don't come back within 90 days, the trial will go on without them.
These changes in the law aim to make things fair, faster, and safer for everyone in the country.
