On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Unaided Private Schools Association called for the closure of all private schools in the state to protest the arrest of a private school principal and a teacher on charges of aiding suicide after a 17-year-old girl student allegedly jumped off the third floor of the school building in Azamgarh on July 31.

"We were forced to take this step because, in several cases, action was taken against school staff without a proper investigation." The most recent incident occurred in Azamgarh, where a school principal was killed. "On Tuesday, all private schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed," said Anil Agarwal, president of the organization.

Across the state, there are over 25,000 private schools accredited with CBSE, ICSE, and UP Board.
"In the Azamgarh case, the police appear to have immediately held the principal, a teacher, and the school management responsible for the girl's death," Agarwal added. The principal and teacher were arrested after police filed an FIR. Both have been imprisoned since then," added Agarwal.

He went on to say that as a result of "several" such events in the recent past, teachers are frequently rejecting to accept the position of principal. "We request that the government draft guidelines for us." We also urge the formation of a committee to investigate any charges made against school workers or authorities. If someone is discovered to be responsible after a thorough investigation, harsh punishment should be taken," Agarwal said.

An FIR was filed on July 31 against the principal and a teacher of a private school in Azamgarh after a 17-year-old girl allegedly leaped from the third story of the school building. The girl's family claims she took extreme action in response to "frequent harassment" by the principal and teacher.

The school principal and a teacher were detained on culpable homicide charge two days after the FIR was filed.
The girl's father filed a police report stating that the two had been "ill-treating" his daughter and humiliating her in front of others.

According to the father, his daughter told him that a teacher and the principal used to "harass" her on a regular basis. "They (accused) used to torment my daughter over a variety of issues... Especially after she objected to school uniforms and fees. The two accused should face harsh punishment, according to the father.
In a video posted online, the principal is heard saying, "We don't know what caused the death." The school administration is also unaware of how the girl got to the third floor." In the video, she also claims that school staff brought the girl to the hospital after the event.
