Ban Lifted From TikTok: The website of Chinese video streaming platform TikTok has started again in India after 5 years, although the app is still not available. In fact, in 2020, the Indian government banned many Chinese apps including TikTok citing security reasons. Along with this, the ban has also been lifted from the shopping website AliExpress and it has been unblocked in India.

According to a report by Business Today, many users are able to open the TikTok website, but the app is not visible on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Neither TikTok nor its parent company ByteDance has given any official statement regarding the return of the app in India.

Let us tell you that the ban on TikTok was imposed in June 2020 when the India-China tension was at its peak in the Galwan Valley. The Indian Government banned 59 mobile apps, calling them a threat to national security. While this list included names like TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser and many other popular apps in India.

The return of the TikTok website has come at a time when India-China relations are witnessing a softening. Recently, in the meeting of PM Modi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, issues like maintaining peace on the border, opening border trade and increasing investment were discussed. However, the Government of India has not yet made any official announcement to lift the ban on the app.

In June 2020, the Government of India issued a notification announcing the ban on 59 mobile apps citing national security concerns. Officials had said that there was sufficient evidence to prove that these apps were engaged in activities prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India and public order. The Ministry of Information Technology of India had imposed the ban under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000.
