Bengal BJP Protesters Confine Union Minister in Party Office in Protest

In West Bengal's Bankura district, a group of BJP workers took an unusual step by locking up Union Minister Subhas Sarkar in their party office, citing concerns about his alleged "dictatorial" behavior in running the district unit.

The incident unfolded during a meeting held around 1 p.m., where Union Minister Subhas Sarkar, who also serves as the MoS for Education and is a Member of Parliament from Bankura, was confronted by BJP workers. These party members entered the district party office, raised slogans, and proceeded to confine him. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a video of the incident on Twitter, emphasizing the BJP's internal conflicts.

The lockdown of Subhas Sarkar persisted for approximately half an hour before party workers eventually released him. One protester, Mohit Sharma, criticized Sarkar for his perceived incompetence and alleged favoritism in appointing district committee members. He claimed that Sarkar disregarded hardworking party members and asserted that the BJP's poor performance in the Bankura Municipality elections was due to Sarkar's ineffectiveness.

Amid the chaos, another group of BJP workers arrived at the party office, leading to a scuffle between the two factions. Local police intervened and successfully rescued Sarkar from the situation.

West Bengal BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya expressed disappointment over the incident and pledged to take action against the protesting party workers. He stressed that such behavior is unacceptable within the BJP's disciplined framework and that there are proper channels to address grievances. Bhattacharya also clarified that Subhas Sarkar had no direct involvement in the district unit, dismissing the allegations as misunderstandings.

In response, the TMC seized the opportunity to criticize the BJP, highlighting ongoing infighting within the West Bengal unit. They described the incident in Bankura as a manifestation of the party's internal discord, suggesting that the BJP's unity is a facade and that the party is struggling to maintain a cohesive front in the state. The TMC's comment underscores the challenges facing the BJP in West Bengal's political landscape.
