This announcement was made late on Tuesday (January 23). PM Modi expressed happiness at Karpoori Thakur being honored with the Bharat Ratna. He stated, "I am pleased that the Government of India has decided to bestow the Bharat Ratna upon the great public leader and symbol of social justice, Karpoori Thakur Ji. This decision comes as we celebrate his birth centenary."

Who was Karpuri Thakur?
Born in Samastipur, Bihar, Karpooriji Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar twice, although he could never complete his term. He is renowned for paving the way for reservations for backward classes and implementing the recommendations of the Mungeri Lala Commission. For this, he had to sacrifice his government. Additionally, he introduced significant changes to the education system of Bihar, including abolishing the requirement of passing English in the matriculation examination.
Karpuri Thakur's son, Ramnath Thakur, expressed gratitude, stating, "We have reaped the fruits of 36 years of penance. I thank the government on behalf of my family and the 15 crore people of Bihar
