The Bihar Education Department has instructed all instructors in the state's public schools to sell the discarded midday food sacks for Rs 20 each. Many people did not like the decision, and it has drawn criticism.

In a letter dated August 14, 2023, Mithilesh Mishra, the director of the mid-day meal program, instructed all district program officers (mid-day meal) to make sure that the empty gunny bags are sold once the grains have been utilized to make midday meals for students.

Additionally, the concerned district program administrators were instructed to deposit sales revenues into the regional bank accounts used to administer state planning funding.

According to a previous order from back in 2016, the cost of gunny bags acquired during the distribution of food grains for the ambitious mid-day scheme was set at Rs 10 per piece.

Notably, the state education department has intermittently been in the news for its actions recently. Be it a change to the hiring process for teachers or decrees requiring both instructors' and students' attendance.
