When did the Nitish Katara murder case take place?

Early in the morning of February 17, 2002, Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal kidnapped and brutally murdered 25-year-old Nitish Katara. Nitish was an MBA graduate and the son of an IAS officer.

The murder was motivated by a close relationship between Nitish Katara and Vikas's sister, Bharti Yadav. According to reports, contract killer Sukhdev Pehalwan was used to carry out the murder. On February 20, 2002, Nitish Katara's burned and badly beaten body was found near the Hapur crossing in a village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. The body was in such a state that it was beyond identification.

Bharti Yadav was the daughter of Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav. DP Yadav's son, Vikas Yadav, and his nephew, Vishal, carried out the murder because of a love affair. In 2014, the Supreme Court ruled the case an honor killing, fueled by a belief in the caste system. That same year, the Delhi High Court sentenced the accused to 25 years in prison without remission, and an additional five years for destroying evidence.

Kidnapping and Murder from a Wedding Venue

On February 17, 2002, Vikas and Vishal Yadav kidnapped Nitish Katara from a wedding ceremony in Ghaziabad at night. Nitish's friends believed Katara would return soon, but there was no trace of him. On the morning of February 17, Nitish's badly burned body was found 80 kilometers from the wedding venue. Immediately after the police discovered his mutilated body, Katara's mother, Neelam, filed an FIR. The police charged Vikas and Vishal with murder, kidnapping for murder, and destruction of evidence.

Burnt body spoke the truth

On March 31, 2002, the police issued a four-page charge sheet in the murder case. Following a request from Nitish's mother, Neelam Katara, the Supreme Court ordered the case to be transferred from the Ghaziabad Sessions Court to the Delhi High Court. Neelam challenged the Delhi High Court's order sentencing the two men to 25 and five years' imprisonment, respectively, and instead demanded the death penalty or life imprisonment for them.

Bloody conspiracy of the Nitish Katara murder case

The hired killer, Sukhdev Pehalwan, was arrested in 2005 and conducted a separate trial, after which the trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

From 2003 to 2006, Katara's girlfriend, Bharti Yadav, repeatedly evaded court summons. In September 2004, the court issued the first non-bailable warrant. Bharti claimed that she was pursuing a professional course in London, which prevented her from appearing at the court summons. In 2006, the prosecution appealed for the cancellation of her passport and granted her a two-month extension to appear.

Summary

In 2008, the court convicted Vikas and Vishal in the Nitish Katara murder case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. In April 2014, the Delhi High Court upheld the sentence of 25 years in prison without remission and an additional five years for destruction of evidence. The Supreme Court later sentenced Bharti's cousins, Vikas and Vishal Yadav, to 25 years in prison, and Sukhdev Yadav, alias Pehalwan, to 20 years in prison.
