Bengaluru Implements Strict Measures: Carpooling Banned with Hefty Rs 10,000 Fine Penalties
Bengaluru's transport department has imposed a sweeping ban on carpooling within the city, with individuals who violate this prohibition facing substantial fines of up to Rs 10,000. This decision comes on the heels of numerous complaints lodged by local taxi associations.
Transport department officials underscored the prohibition on using unregistered private cars for commercial purposes. Specifically, vehicles with white number plates, which are not authorized for commercial use, are prohibited from serving as cabs for business activities.
According to information reported by the Times of India, individuals participating in carpooling through mobile applications may encounter severe consequences, including a six-month suspension of their vehicle's registration certificate (RC) and financial penalties ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
The crux of the matter revolves around carpooling apps, which authorities argue are in breach of regulations by aggregating private cars for commercial purposes. This has led to mounting discontent among taxi driver unions. Consequently, regional transport offices (RTOs) have been instructed to crack down on these illegal carpooling operations.
This move has sparked mixed reactions in Bengaluru, with some residents expressing frustration over the loss of a convenient and cost-effective transportation option. Carpooling has been popular among commuters looking to share rides and reduce traffic congestion in the bustling city. However, the transport department appears determined to enforce the ban, citing concerns about safety, accountability, and adherence to transportation regulations.
As the ban on carpooling takes effect, Bengaluru's commuters may find themselves searching for alternative transportation solutions, while the local authorities work to maintain order and compliance within the city's transportation sector.
