Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav alleged that the states ruled by opposition parties have conducted caste-based survey for political reasons. He said that the Modi government is determined to include caste census in a transparent manner in the upcoming all-India census process.
The caste census, which is conducted every 10 years in India, was to begin in April 2020, but was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.
'Congress opposed caste census'
On the inclusion of caste census in the national census, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, "Congress governments have always opposed caste census. In 2010, the late Dr. Manmohan Singh had said that the matter of caste census should be considered in the cabinet.
A group of ministers was formed to consider the subject. Most political parties have recommended caste census. Despite this, the Congress government decided to conduct a caste survey or caste census." The country will move forward with caste census - Ashwini Vaishnav
Cabinet's big decision
Taking a dig at the opposition, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, "It is well understood that the Congress and its allies have used the caste census only as a political weapon. According to Article 246 of the Indian Constitution, the census subject is listed at 69th place in the Union List in the 7th Schedule. According to the Constitution, census is a union subject."

Ashwini Vaishnav said, "Some states have conducted surveys to count castes. Some states have done it well, while some others have conducted such surveys in a non-transparent manner from a completely political point of view." He said that the caste census will strengthen the social and economic structure of the nation.
