Chandigarh: Mayor Saurabh Joshi has proposed an elevated pedestrian project, termed “Sky Garden”, during a meeting of the Municipal Corporation’s Finance and Contract Committee.

The project draws inspiration from global urban structures such as High Line in New York and OCBC Skyway in Singapore.

The proposal aims to create a network of elevated walkways across the city, allowing residents to walk above ground level through green corridors with panoramic views.

Focus on Urban Design and Sustainability

The project is based on the concept of urban layering. It proposes shifting pedestrian pathways above ground to free up space below for landscaping, flowerbeds, and ecological restoration.

Officials said advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital twin modelling will be used to ensure minimal impact on heritage trees. Precision engineering methods will be applied to protect root systems and tree canopies.

Adaptive smart lighting is also planned to reduce light pollution and safeguard bird and wildlife habitats.

Pilot Phase and Materials

Authorities have been directed to identify 9 to 10 parks and green belts for the pilot phase. The project is aligned with the “Viksit Chandigarh 2047” vision.

The design will include sustainable materials such as weathering steel and light permeable decking to allow natural sunlight and rainwater flow.

Other Development Works Approved

The committee also cleared multiple infrastructure projects across sectors 20, 34, 35, 41, 43, and 45, along with Dhanas village.

These include road repairs, paver block relaying, sewerage upgrades, stormwater drainage, and street lighting works.

Additional approvals include market upgrades in sectors 37-D and 38, installation of high mast lighting, fountains at the Japanese Garden, and community development works in Mauli Jagran.
