Cough syrup deaths: Dr. Soni arrested in MP's Chhindwara for prescribing Coldrif medicine

Cough syrup deaths: Police have arrested Dr. Praveen Soni in connection with the deaths of 10 children in Parasia, Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The incident came to light after the children died after consuming Coldrif cough syrup.

In this case, Srisan Pharmaceuticals and Dr. Soni are accused of illegally prescribing the syrup. Police have registered a case and initiated action, vowing to take strict legal action against the culprits. Dr. Soni is charged under sections 276, 105, and 27A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Severity of the case and the number of deaths

It should be noted that the deaths of children under the age of 5 were caused by Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in the medium term, not Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). The recent deaths of five more children have brought the total death toll to 10.

At least three children are currently battling for life on dialysis and ventilator support at a hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Super-Divisional Magistrate Parasia, Shubham Kumar Yadav, stated that "Since September 4th, nine children have died, including Shivam Rathore, Vidhi, Adnan, Usaid, Rishika, Hitansh, Chanchalesh, Vikas, and Sandhya. Thirteen other children are being treated in hospitals in Chhindwara and Nagpur."

Investigation and Causes

Detailed testing of water and other samples collected from the children's residences by national institutions, including the National Institute of Virology (NIV-Pune), concluded that water, vector-borne diseases, or rats were not the cause.

Examination of the children's medical histories revealed that the use of Coldrif cough syrup was common in all cases of death.

Nonetheless, a detailed interrogation of Dr. Soni is underway. In addition, an investigation is also expected against other company officials and medical staff. Strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty after the investigation is complete.

Further Action in this tragic incident

CM Mohan Yadav described the incident as extremely sad and stated that the entire Madhya Pradesh The sale of Coldrif syrup has been banned in the state. The sale of other products from the syrup manufacturing company is also being banned.

Summary

Chief Minister stated that the syrup factory is located in Kanchipuram. The state government had requested the Tamil Nadu government to conduct an investigation. Upon receiving the investigation report, strict action was taken immediately. The Chief Minister assured that the culprits would not be spared at any cost and that relentless action would continue at the local and state levels following the tragic deaths of the children.
