Cyclone Biparjoy: 2 fatalities, 23 injured, trees uprooted, over 950 Gujarat villages without power. 10 updates

Cyclone Biparjoy was 30 km north of Naliya in
Saurashtra-Kutch until 2.30 am. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)
predicted it will move northeast and deteriorate into a cyclonic storm by
Friday morning and a depression across south Rajasthan by evening.

1. Biparjoy made landfall near Jakhau at 6:30 pm on
Thursday as a strong cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 115 to 125 kmph gusting
up to 140 kmph.


2. Power was lost in 45 villages in the Maliya tehsil after strong winds tore down electric lines and poles. 11  little towns now have electricity again. More than 300 power poles have been damaged or destroyed in remote coastal communities and desert regions. J C Goswami, executive engineer, PGVCL in Morbi, informed the news agency ANI that the company is striving to restore power to the remaining rural areas as quickly as feasible.

3. Modi called Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra

4. The cyclone crossed the coast near Jakhau Port on Thursday evening, but began weakening several hours later; by 2:30 a.m. on Friday, it was carrying 100 kilometer-per-hour winds with gusts of 110 kilometer-per-hour, according to the IMD.

5. Gujarat relief commissioner Alok Singh said 24
animals were killed, 524 trees fell, and electric lines fell in some locations,
leaving 940 villages without power.


6. In the town of Mandvi, there was a complete loss
of electricity. Numerous trees in Mandvi town and along the Jakhau-Mandvi road
were blown over by the high winds. According to Amit Arora, the district
collector: “No casualties have been reported so far.”


7. 99  trains that pass through, start or
end in Biparjoy-affected parts of Gujarat would remain cancelled or
short-terminated, according to the Western Railway.


8. The government of Gujarat reported that
approximately 1 lakh people had evacuated coastal and low-lying areas.


9. Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s minister for climate
change, reported that 82,000 people had been evacuated from the southeast coast
in preparation for “a cyclone the likes of which Pakistan has never
experienced.”

 

10. It was predicted that Karachi, home to almost 20
million people, could be flooded if storm surges reached four meters.
