Cyclone Biparjoy: Gujarat's Asiatic lion Conservation efforts in Gir
In
anticipation of the potential impact of Cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall
on Thursday evening, the Gujarat government has implemented a series of
proactive measures to protect wildlife, including the rare Gir lions and other
animals, that are considered to be the most valuable in
the world.
Deployed
Rescue Teams
Adopting
a zero-casualty policy, the government of Gujarat has strategically deployed
rescue teams in critical areas, including the Gir forest, the Narayan Sarovar
Sanctuary in Kutch, and Mata’s Madh, Barda, and Narayan Sarovar regions.
The
government of Gujarat set up 184 teams across nine parts of the Wildlife and
Territorial Circle of Junagadh to make sure the Asiatic lions are safe. These
teams are working hard to help people, act quickly, and get rid of trees that
have fallen. Gir East, Gir West, Sasan, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Jamnagar,
Bhavnagar, Morbi, and Junagadh Forest are some of the nine regions.
Control
room and Technology to save lions
Also,
58 control rooms have been set up so that emergency SOS messages about wild
animals in trouble can be sent and received quickly. A statement from the state
government says that satellite technology is being used to track the moves of
lions when natural disasters happen.
The
Forest Department has set up a clever way to track where lions go by putting
radio collars on some of the lions that live in groups. Through a satellite
link, this technology lets a monitoring cell keep track of where they go. At
the moment, a team of experts is keeping a close eye on 40 lions that live in
the Gir forest and along the coast of the state.

Specialised
teams were put in key spots along the seven rivers in the Gir forest to make
sure that both lions and people were safe. If rescue activities are needed,
these teams are ready to do them. Also, to protect the people who lived in the
Gir area, the right steps were taken, such as moving people to safe shelter
homes.
A
total of 46 safe shelters were set up in Gir, and another 45 shelters were set
up in Barda. These shelters offer safety and help to the local people. Also,
six expert teams with the right tools and equipment were sent out to help the
animals. The
official statement said that four rescue teams were sent to the Narayan Sarovar
Sanctuary and Dayapar range in Kutch, especially to Dayapar, Mata Madh, Barda,
and Narayan Sarovar.
Also,
13 groups of five people each were put together in the large desert area of
Kutch. These teams have JCBs, tractors, and other important tools carefully placed
in key spots. Also, three teams were sent to the horse sanctuary to be ready
for rescue operations or anything else that might be needed.
The
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden of Gujarat,
Nityanand Srivastav, were confident when he said that they are ready and had everything they need to deal with the problems that the storm will bring. He
said that they have put together different teams to handle the situation well.
