Cyclone Michaung: troubles life in Chennai as 17 deaths reported
In the wake of the Michaung cyclone, Chennai is grappling with the aftermath, with 17 reported deaths within the Greater Chennai Police jurisdiction, as stated by the Chennai Police. Heavy rains have led to flooding, prompting the deployment of rescue workers to evacuate affected residents.
The Arumbakkam area in Chennai remains waterlogged following intense rainfall, while Green Corridors from the Airport to Anna Salai and ECR are being maintained for emergency travel. Several roads are experiencing waterlogging of at least 1 foot, and traffic closure on Manjambakkam to Vadaperumbakkam Road is attributed to water release from the Puzhal Lake.
Severe waterlogging in Chennai
The Chennai Police, alongside DDRT Teams, are collaborating with the Government and Highways Department to address major waterlogging areas. A total of 225 people were rescued from various locations, including Ganesapuram, Slaterpuram, Shanmuga Street, Anbu Nagar, West Mambalam, Ram Nagar, and Anna Nagar.

The fire department also captured a 14-foot-long King Cobra that had entered a residential area in Bhagavathipuram village.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has sought immediate interim relief of Rs 5060 crores from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a formal request to send a central team to assess the cyclone's damages. CM Stalin, who personally inspected affected areas, emphasized the government's concerted efforts in a statement.
In response to the situation, DMK MP Kanimozhi noted the government's preparedness, contrasting it with the 2015 floods in Chennai. She highlighted the evacuation of over 411 relief shelters, pumping out water from most areas, and restoring power to a significant percentage of houses.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department reported that the Deep Depression, a remnant of Cyclonic Storm "Michaung," weakened into a depression over Northeast Telangana. The depression is expected to further weaken into a well-marked Low-Pressure Area in the next 6 hours.
