Officials say that the Drug Control Act has many loopholes, which are being exploited to exploit this business of playing with the lives of ordinary people. The issue of failed drug samples came to light during an investigation by the Drug Control Department of Rajasthan. When Aaj Tak began investigating the functioning of the Drug Control Department of Rajasthan, it was discovered that although laboratory tests were being conducted and results were being released, irregularities were taking place in the name of action.

According to the Rajasthan Drug Control Department, hundreds of drug samples failed.

Samples of these drugs failed:

Antibiotics: Six batches of amoxicillin, clavulanic acid tablets, ciprofloxacin, cefpodoxime, and ceftriaxone injections failed the test. Over 100,000 Medirich Limited drugs had been sold before the test.

Steroids: Three batches of betamethasone failed the test. The report came on December 5th. By then, 30,000 Mediwell Biotic drugs had been sold.

Antiallergics: Four batches of levocetirizine and montelukast failed the test. The report came on December 5th. However, by then, 35,000 Theravin Pharmaceuticals had already sold their products.

People's health is being compromised

Three batches of anti-diabetics—Glimepiride and Pioglitazone—failed. Relief Biotech sold over 18,000 products. Additionally, three batches of painkillers—Aceclofenac and Paracetamol—failed. The report came on December 11th, but by then, 20,000 products had already been sold.

Gas and Calcium Medicines Also Failed Samples

Eight batches of calcium and vitamin D3 supplements also failed. Three batches of PPIs for stomach gas failed. Several thousand tablets of these have also been sold. Meanwhile, two batches of Losartan, used for cardiac treatment, failed. Amex Pharma, the manufacturer of this product, has sold over 10,000 tablets.

Salts are also missing from medicines

Samples also revealed that salts are missing from medicines ranging from stomach aches to nasal and ear medications. Infections were found in everything from injections to fluids. Rajasthan's Commissioner of Drug Controllers, T. Subhamangalan, stated that in the next two days, they are conducting intensive investigations at 65 pharmaceutical companies in Rajasthan. "We are serious about substandard medicines."

According to the rules, if samples of these counterfeit medicines fail, a court case should have been filed, but in most cases, this has not happened. These companies' samples were supposed to be tested at the Central Laboratory in Kolkata, and a request for a national ban was made. However, Rajasthan's Special Drug Controller sat on the report.

Counterfeit medicines are available for every ailment.

There is no such ailment for which counterfeit medicines have not been caught being sold in the market. The government's attitude towards counterfeit and substandard medicines is so lax that by the time an investigation is conducted and a ban is announced, millions of people have already used them.

Summary

Most medicines are manufactured in other states, requiring collaboration between the central government and other states. Pharmaceutical companies are taking advantage of this.
