The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) inaugurated a waste-to-art park on Kautilya Marg in Chanakyapuri, inspired by the theme of the G20 summit. The park features sculptures of birds and animals representing G20 member countries, all crafted from scrap metal sourced from construction sites and automobile waste dumps.

The park showcases handcrafted sculptures of various animals, including India's iconic Peacock, the American Bison, the majestic Brazilian Jaguar, the Saudi Arabian Camel, the Korean Magpie, the Australian Kangaroo, the Russian Brown Bear, and the exotic Indonesian Komodo Dragon, among others. These sculptures serve as a testament to the transformation of waste into art in an aesthetic manner.

The installation of these sculptures coincides with the participation of G20 member countries in the Delhi summit on September 9-10. Skilled artists crafted these sculptures using materials such as iron bars, automobile parts, metal plates, wire mesh, rims, chains, and bearing balls salvaged from junkyards.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena officially inaugurated the park, emphasizing its significance as a gift to the people of Delhi. The project draws inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment), which aims to enhance the quality of life, promote eco-friendly living, ensure cleanliness, and encourage citizen participation in environmental protection.

Satish Upadhyay, NDMC vice-chairman, highlighted the project's alignment with the Indian culture of "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" and the circular economy. He emphasized that such initiatives foster a harmonious relationship with the environment and will be integrated into Mission LiFE, covering various aspects of environmental preservation.

The idea for the waste-to-art park originated in December 2022 and was realized through a collaboration between NDMC and the Lalit Kala Academy. Twenty-five renowned artists from across the country crafted the sculptures at the Lalit Kala Academy's artist camp in Garhi Village, Delhi, starting in April. Following the completion of the sculptures, landscaping work in the park commenced in July. The project also engaged around 50 students from universities across the NCR, who volunteered and learned the technique of crafting sculptures using waste scrap material.
