The number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives has witnessed a significant decline of 33%, according to recent data from the Maldives Tourism Ministry, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Male.

Statistics Reflect Deteriorating Relations

As per the Tourism Ministry's statistics for 2023, the figures reveal a notable drop from 41,054 Indian tourists recorded by March 4 last year to 27,224 as of March 2 this year. This represents a decrease of 13,830 visitors compared to the same period last year, placing India at the sixth position on the list of tourist source markets with a six percent market share.

Background of the Diplomatic Row

The diplomatic row ignited when three Maldivian deputy ministers made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in response to his proposals for the development of Lakshadweep as a beach tourism destination. The situation escalated, prompting New Delhi to summon the Maldivian envoy and register a strong protest against the offensive remarks. The three deputy ministers faced suspension with pay.

Indian Tourists and Boycott

Earlier this year, concerns were raised among stakeholders in the Maldives tourism industry as the boycott campaign gained momentum in India, supported by popular film stars. The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) conducted a survey to assess the impact of booking cancellations by Indian guests, although the findings were not publicly disclosed.

Shift in Top Tourist Market

India, traditionally the top tourist market for the Maldives, experienced a decline in its market share, while China emerged as the leading market with over 54,000 tourist arrivals so far this year. The strain in diplomatic relations has significantly influenced travel patterns to this popular tourist destination for Indian tourists.
