Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata: Sanjay Roy, the accused in the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, was not an employee of the hospital. However, he was frequently seen in the building and on the campus, making him a familiar face.

Fearlessness in Wrongdoing

Roy worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. He was known to involve himself in various tasks, intervening in volunteer work and even in the recruitment of contractual staff. His primary role was in traffic management, for which he was paid a salary of ₹12,000 per month. Although civic volunteers don't enjoy the same benefits as regular police personnel, Roy reportedly had access to many of the perks and facilities available to Kolkata Police officers. According to reports, Roy joined the Disaster Management Group of Kolkata Police as a volunteer in 2019 but later moved to the Police Welfare Cell. He eventually found his way to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he cleverly gained access to all the departments.

Racket Busted in Hospital

In addition to the murder and rape, Roy was allegedly running a racket within the hospital. He is accused of changing patients' relatives' names for new admissions and charging for beds at nearby nursing homes if the hospital could not accommodate them. He used his contacts to avoid arrest and often managed to stay out of legal trouble.

The Heinous Crime Incident

Local media reports describe Roy as a fearless individual who roamed around the city wearing a T-shirt with the Kolkata Police logo, giving the impression that he was untouchable. When he was finally arrested by Kolkata Police, his behavior was brazen; he reportedly told officers, "If you want, you can hang me." His mobile phone was found to contain numerous inappropriate images. CCTV footage from the hospital premises helped lead to his arrest. He was apprehended at the emergency building at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, where the doctor’s body was also discovered. A Bluetooth headset, found next to the doctor's body, was seen around Roy’s neck in the footage.

Nationwide Protest

When Roy entered the hospital building, he was wearing the Bluetooth headset, but it was missing when he left the premises. The headset was later found near the victim's body and was paired with Roy's phone. After committing the crime, Roy reportedly returned home, cleaned his clothes, and attempted to destroy evidence. However, the police discovered bloodstains on his shoes. Roy is currently in police custody until August 23rd.

The rape and murder of an on-duty doctor in Kolkata have sparked nationwide protests. Following the protests led by doctors, the principal of RG Kar Medical College resigned, raising serious questions about how to protect medical professionals from such crimes in the future.
