Elderly Woman, 79, Fatally Abused by Caregiver, Dies After Assault

Tragedy struck in Kolkata as a 79-year-old woman, Kala Mishra, met a horrifying end at the hands of her caregiver. Kala, who had been bedridden for seven years due to paralysis, relied on the assistance of two caregivers for her daily needs. The shocking incident unfolded on September 11 when one of the caregivers discovered Kala lifeless in her bedroom, prompting her to inform the family.

Initially believing it to be a natural death, the family proceeded with cremation. However, disturbing revelations would soon come to light. The family, after reviewing CCTV footage from the flat in Kolkata's Baguihati area where Kala resided, discovered the gruesome extent of the caregiver's cruelty.

In the chilling footage, Safia Khatun, the caregiver in question, could be seen subjecting Kala to relentless physical abuse, including slapping and torture throughout the night on September 10. The evidence was undeniable, prompting one of Kala's relatives to file a formal complaint with the police.

Law enforcement swiftly took action, arresting Safia in connection with the heinous crime. During questioning, Safia confessed to her reprehensible actions, revealing that she had subjected Kala to torture because the elderly woman disrupted her sleep. This shocking admission left authorities stunned.

Furthermore, additional CCTV footage corroborated the caregiver's malevolent intent, capturing Safia attempting to smother Kala by covering her face with a bedsheet or blanket. After perpetrating these acts of brutality, Safia clandestinely left the flat the following morning, leaving the victim without any assistance or aid.

This heart-wrenching incident has not only exposed the vulnerability of elderly individuals in need of care but also serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vigilant oversight and monitoring when entrusting the well-being of loved ones to caregivers. The tragic loss of Kala Mishra has ignited a fervent call for justice and a renewed emphasis on safeguarding the elderly from potential abuse in caregiving situations.
