Every Egg Must have an Expiry Date: Yogi Government Set to Implement Strict Regulations
According to information provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry, in addition to the expiry date, eggs will also bear the date on which they were laid.
Every Egg Must have an Expiry Date: The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has taken a significant decision, making it mandatory for egg producers—effective April 1st—to stamp the 'expiry date' (date of spoilage) on every single egg. The objective of this initiative is to enhance food safety standards and increase consumer awareness.
Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, stated that previously, food safety regulations were not being properly adhered to, and many consumers were even unaware of the rules governing them.
Consequently, these stricter measures have been introduced
According to information provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry, in addition to the expiry date, eggs will also bear the date on which they were laid. Department officials have warned that traders and farmers who fail to comply with this regulation will face consequences: either their products will be destroyed, or the eggs will be labeled as "Not Fit For Human Consumption."
What Happens If the Rules Are Not Followed?
The Department asserts that traders and farmers who disregard this regulation could face severe penalties. With the strict enforcement of this rule, any eggs found not to meet the prescribed standards may be destroyed or labeled as "Unsuitable for Human Consumption." Officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry have emphasized the critical importance of adhering to this new regulation.
Guidelines for Safe Egg Consumption
According to research, if eggs are stored at a normal ambient temperature of approximately 30 degrees Celsius, they can be safely consumed for up to two weeks. Furthermore, if eggs are stored at a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, they remain safe for consumption for up to five weeks. This clearly underscores the vital importance of proper storage methods in keeping eggs fresh and safe for consumers. **Challenges in Storing Eggs**
According to regulations established by the Food Safety and Drug Administration, eggs should not be stored in cold storage facilities alongside vegetables, as the two require different temperature ranges. Currently, the country lacks the necessary infrastructure to store eggs properly in cold storage facilities. As far as Uttar Pradesh is concerned, such facilities are available in only two locations across the entire state (Agra and Jhansi).
Summary
Consequently, given the shortage of necessary infrastructure, egg suppliers may face difficulties in complying with the new regulations regarding the stamping of eggs.
