There are two types of fatty liver: alcoholic, which is caused by excessive alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is associated with obesity, diabetes, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. The initial signs of fatty liver are often invisible, but as the disease progresses, symptoms such as pain or pressure in the right side of the abdomen, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss may appear. When the disease becomes severe, it can lead to swelling in the legs and abdomen, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, light stool, and mental confusion.

Don't Ignore This Sign of Fatty Liver

According to the UK health agency NHS, swelling in the legs is also a sign of fatty liver and it's important to recognize it early. This condition, in which your legs swell, is called pedal edema. If you experience swelling in your legs, you shouldn't ignore it, thinking it's due to prolonged standing, excessive walking, or something else.

To diagnose this condition, press firmly on the swollen skin for several seconds. If a depression forms after removing your finger, or if the depression persists for a long time, it indicates pitting edema. This is caused by fluid accumulation in the body.
