Government has decided to take swift action in response to the threat posed by deepfake technology
The government has made the decision to act quickly to combat the threat posed by deepfake technology, which uses artificial intelligence to produce false and deceptive images and videos.
On Thursday, social media companies, politicians, and cybersecurity specialists met with important stakeholders, including the Union Minister for Electronics, Information Technology, and Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Goal of the meeting
According to the minister, the purpose of the meeting was to develop a comprehensive plan of action to address the problems caused by deepfake content. He declared that detection, prevention, reporting mechanisms, and awareness would be the four main focuses of the strategy.
According to him, deepfake has become a serious social threat that requires quick attention. In addition, he said that fresh rules would be implemented to deal with the problem, and that the regulations' drafting would be finished in the upcoming weeks.
IT Minister showed his concern on Deepfake being harmful to the society
He said that every stakeholder had acknowledged the gravity of the threat and the necessity of stricter regulation. According to him, deepfake content is extremely detrimental to society and does not qualify as free speech.
The minister also released a video that he claimed captured the entrance to a Hamas covert tunnel beneath a private residence close to a Gaza hospital.
He claimed that the video served as an illustration of how propaganda and false information could be disseminated via deepfake technology.
Next meeting will be held in December first week
Professors studying artificial intelligence, NASSCOM, and social media companies were present at the meeting. The minister announced that the first week of December would be the date of the next meeting regarding the deepfake issue.
