Gujarat police have obtained custody of Lawrence Bishnoi, a jailed gangster, from Punjab Police. He is being investigated in connection with a case involving the smuggling of drugs across borders.

Bishnoi will face inquiries about potential connections to the seizure of 34 kg of heroin, valued at nearly Rs 200 crore, from a Pakistani fishing boat off the Gujarat coast in September 2022. The drugs were confiscated during a joint operation by the Gujarat Police and the Indian Coast Guard. Six Pakistani nationals were apprehended in relation to the drug seizure.

During interrogation, one of the suspects alleged that the drugs were being transported from Pakistan to India at the direction of Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster. Consequently, Bishnoi was charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) (UAPA) Act.

On Wednesday, the Gujarat Police gained custody of Lawrence Bishnoi. He is set to be transported from Bathinda to Ahmedabad by air, where he will be presented before a court. The police intend to request further remand of Bishnoi for the case.

Lawrence Bishnoi's criminal history is extensive, with numerous cases against him. He once issued death threats to Bollywood actor Salman Khan from prison. In a previous instance, he claimed responsibility for the attack on singer Sidhu Moose Wala in Punjab's Mansa.

Bishnoi leads a gang with a broad reach, encompassing Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh. Their criminal operations extend across five countries: India, Canada, Dubai, Austria, and Mexico. The gang is involved in activities such as kidnapping, murder, and extortion for ransom.
