Vanatara, a global wildlife conservation organization founded by Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani, has announced the establishment of Vanatara University in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This university is the world's first integrated global university dedicated to wildlife conservation and zoology. Vanatara University is deeply connected to animal welfare, scientific advancement and the future of wildlife conservation.

The institute aims to prepare future leaders in veterinary medicine, conservation and wildlife care. Its curriculum will shape a purpose-driven and future-oriented model of education using India's knowledge traditions. "The future of wildlife conservation will depend on how we prepare minds and institutions to serve life with compassion, knowledge and skill.

The deeply personal journey of seeing animals in stressful situations and the need for greater capacity to care for them has shaped Vanatara University. Inspired by the principles of the ancient Nalanda University and the sentiment of the verse "Ano Bhadra: Kratavo Yantu Vishwat:" which means that noble ideas may reach us from all directions, this university is committed to preparing a new generation determined to protect every living being," said Anant Ambani.

Reflecting these values in a traditional setting, two Bijolia sandstones were incorporated into the design of the foundation stone. Inspired by the ancient Vindhya formations that lie at the geological base of ancient Nalanda, now in Bihar, these stones symbolize India's enduring legacy of knowledge and learning.

The foundation stone laying ceremony, organized in accordance with Hindu traditions, was attended by representatives from education, science, conservation and public life, including Anant Ambani’s teachers and mentors. The heart of the event was the ceremonial installation of soil, water and stone collected from biodiverse regions across India, such as grasslands, forests, wetlands, drylands and the Himalayas as well as other highlands in the north, south, east, west and central parts of the country, as a symbolic foundation stone, symbolizing the vision of building a university on the ecological prosperity of India and the natural heritage of the country.

Vantara University will unite several different disciplines in a single educational ecosystem, which will be linked to real conservation systems. Using Vantara’s expertise in land work, the university will translate knowledge from the field into academic programs, professional training and a globally relevant framework. By combining compassion, science and conservation, the university will equip professionals to address the complex and ever-changing challenges facing wildlife and ecosystem wellbeing.

The university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship and other specialized courses in a variety of disciplines. These include wildlife medicine and surgery, nutrition, behavioural science, genetics, epidemiology, forest health, conservation policy and environmental design for natural animal care.

The university will also provide scholarships to support students from socially and economically marginalised groups through specialised colleges aligned with Vantara’s operational capabilities. Vantara University will be supported by state-of-the-art academic and clinical infrastructure, international collaborations and a residential campus.

It will focus on action-oriented research to strengthen animal welfare and advanced conservation systems. Its educational model will integrate in-situ and ex-situ breeding, linking natural habitats with scientific care and long-term wildlife welfare and management. Recognizing that the future of animal breeding will be shaped in classrooms, laboratories and human consciences as well as in the wild, the university aims to advance wildlife veterinary science and breeding education.

It will simultaneously develop knowledge resources in wildlife health, animal care, environmental design and conservation, which will serve as a long-term platform for education, research and innovation.

The groundbreaking ceremony also marked the launch of a broader national effort to advance compassionate breeding education. This includes the announcement of the ‘Vantara University Founding Fellows’ and the ‘Every Life Matters’ scholarship, along with a call to use knowledge not only for progress but also for protection.

Vantara University’s vision takes it a step further than an academic platform

It reflects the view that forests and wildlife need not only appreciation, but also knowledge, systems and service rendered by trained hands. About Vantara
