Haryana Congress MLA Mamman Khan, accused in the communal violence that unfolded in Nuh in August, was apprehended on Thursday by authorities. The Haryana Police cited "ample evidence" of his involvement in the violence, which occurred in the aftermath of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) yatra.

Khan, who represents Ferozepur Jhirka in the legislative assembly, had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, seeking protection from arrest, with the hearing scheduled for October 19. He vehemently denied his involvement in the case, asserting that he was not present in Nuh on the day the violence occurred. However, the Haryana Police contended that Khan was implicated after a thorough evaluation of the evidence, including phone call records and other supporting materials.

The MLA is set to appear before the court on Friday.

Previously, Khan was twice summoned by Nuh Police to cooperate with the investigation, but he failed to do so, citing viral fever as the reason for his non-compliance. According to Khan's legal representation, he only learned about being named as an accused in the FIR on Thursday.

In his plea to the High Court, Khan also requested the Haryana government to establish a high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) composed of officers not below the rank of Inspector General of Police. He further sought the transfer of cases related to the violence to the SIT, with a directive that the SIT would operate independently.

On July 31, a procession led by the VHP was attacked by mobs in Nuh, resulting in deadly clashes that claimed six lives and left numerous individuals injured.
