Here are ten important facts about the Biparjoy Cyclone
Beginning on June 13,
the state administration will begin evacuating residents from vulnerable
regions up to 5 kilometers inland. On June 14, residents of huts and kuchcha
houses up to 10 kilometers inland will be relocated.
1. Control room configuration by Railways
PTI stated that in
order to keep trains running in many areas of Gujarat, the Indian Railways activated
a disaster management room and opened emergency control centres.
“State and federal
governments are on high alert. Twelve NDRF teams have been deployed in the
districts of Kutch, Porbandar, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Morbi,
and Rajkot, according to Alok Kumar Pandey, the relief commissioner.
2. Cyclone-induced Mass Evacuation
On June 13, Cyclone Biparjoy
diminished from an extremely severe cyclone to a severe cyclone. Nonetheless,
it remained on trajectory for Gujarat’s Saurashtra-Kutch coast.
The government of
Gujarat has decided to begin evacuating its citizens from vulnerable areas up
to 5 kilometres inland beginning on June 13 and will complete the evacuation of
those living in cottages and kuchcha houses up to 10 kilometres inland by June
14.
As a precaution, more
than 8,000 individuals were relocated to temporary cyclone shelters by June 12.
In addition, schools have been closed in the six coastal districts.
The cyclone is expected
to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16, according to officials. According to a
PTI report, the North Western Railway (NWR) has suspended certain train
services.

3. Railways Transportation
Due to the IMD’s
forecast that Biparjoy will make landfall on June 15, the Western Railway has
cancelled 67 trains and either shortened the duration of 43 others or not run
them at all.
Western Railway has
cancelled 67 trains through June 14 and June 15, short-terminated 23 trains,
and decided to short-originate 20 others that would have passed through areas
likely to be affected by the cyclone. These areas include coastal Junagadh,
Porbandar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Morbi in the Saurashtra region and
Kutch. There are both short- and long-distance trains.

The steps and
measures taken so far to deal with cyclone
On June 12, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel via
telephone regarding the status of preparations for the imminent Cyclone
Biparjoy.
Earlier in the day, the
prime minister held a review meeting to assess the preparedness to deal with
the cyclone’s aftermath. During the meeting, he instructed senior officials to
take all feasible steps to ensure that the Gujarat government evacuates
vulnerable populations in a safe manner.
Union Minister Mansukh
Mandaviya is scheduled to travel to Bhuj, the district capital of Kutch, to
monitor the situation in light of the impending cyclone.
5. An orange warning will go on.
The IMD has maintained
an orange alert for the Saurashtra-Kutch coast even as the cyclone has
weakened, due to the fact that Biparjoy is forecast to deliver heavy rain and
stormy winds of 45-55 kmph, with waves of 65 kmph.
Biparjoy is expected to
make landfall near Jakhau port of Kutch between Mandvi in Kutch and Karachi in
Pakistan on June 15 about noon as a very severe cyclone with wind velocities of
125-135 kmph and gusts of 150 kmph, according to the IMD.
6. Operational control office at
Gandhidham
At Gandhidham, a
control office has been made operational. Telephone lines between headquarters
and divisional disaster control will ensure proper operation. Divisional
officers maintain close ties with IMD and the State Government in order to
provide regular updates.
7. Palghar administration prohibits
transportation close to the coast
Due to cyclone
‘Biparjoy’, the district administration of Palghar prohibited the movement of
people near the coast between June 13 and June 15 on June 12.
8.The Minister of Waterways conducts
a high-level meeting to assess preparedness.
ANI reported that the
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, presided
over a high-level meeting with senior officials of the Port Authority to review
preparations for cyclone “Biparjoy.”Biparjoy will be the first
cyclone to traverse the coastline of Gujarat in 25 years.
9. What is the severity of Cyclone
Biparjoy?
If noticed Biparjoy
will be the fifth cyclone of the’severe’ (wind speed of 48 to 63 km/h) or
higher category to cross Gujarat, according to the IMD’s forecast.
Based on the data, this
is the third ‘very severe’ cyclone to develop in the Arabian Sea during the
month of June in the past 58 years.
The path of Cyclone
Biparjoy, which developed in the Arabian Sea and was expected to take it
toward the coast of Pakistan, has shifted, and it will now hit the shore of
northern Gujarat.
10.The
cyclone’s possible effects
Northern and western
coastal districts of Gujarat could experience storm surges of 2-3 metres,
destruction of constructed homes, damage to pucca homes and roads, flooding,
and widespread damage to standing crops, plantations, and orchards, as reported
by India’s Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC).
