On Tuesday, India
reaffirmed its opposition to endorsing China’s grandiose Belt and Road
Initiative (BRI), making it the sole member of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation (SCO) to take such a stance.

At the conclusion of a
virtual summit of the grouping sponsored by India, Russia, Pakistan,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan all reaffirmed their
commitment to the BRI in a declaration made at the end of the meeting.

The document also
stated that the members viewed as critical the implementation of the SCO Economic
Development Strategy 2030 agreed upon by “interested member states”
and initiatives meant to support cooperation in the digital economy, high
technology, and the modernization of existing international rail and road
transport routes.

PM Modi stressed the
importance of improving connectivity during his opening remarks at the summit,
but he also stressed the necessity to adhere to the fundamental principles of
the SCO charter, including the territoriality and sovereignty of member
nations.

Modi presided over the
meeting, which was attended by Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia,
Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, and others from the group.

In order for a region
to develop, a robust connection is required. He argued that more communication
would benefit both parties involved in commercial transactions.

PM Modi said that to
be successful, it is crucial to maintain the basic principles of the SCO charter,
especially respecting the sovereignty and regional integrity of each of the
member states.

Even when the SCO voted
in favor of the BRI in the past, India has always voted against it.

The New Delhi
Declaration reads, “The Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, the
Russian Federation, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan reaffirm their support for
China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and welcome the ongoing work to jointly
implement this project.” This work includes attempts to link the construction
of the Eurasian Economic Union and BRI.

It stated that the SCO
member states plan to increase their collaboration in order to promote sustainable
socio-economic development and raise the standard of living for all SCO
citizens.

They value ensuring the
success of collaborative programs and projects to foster collaboration, such
as the SCO Economic Development Strategy 2030 adopted by interested member
states.

Digital economy; high
technology and innovation; modernization of existing international routes for
road and rail transport; multimodal transport corridors and logistics centers;
finance and investment; energy and food security; reliable, resilient, and
diversified supply chains; industrial cooperation; these are the priority areas
identified under the Economic Development Strategy.
