India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, advocated for the resumption of direct negotiations to establish a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine during informal discussions on the humanitarian situation in Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly.

Emphasizing India's consistent stance, Kamboj expressed support for international efforts to de-escalate the conflict and affirmed India's opposition to terrorism and violence.

"India welcomes all efforts by the international community that strive towards a de-escalation of the conflict and enables the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine," stated Kamboj from the podium of United Nations. She reiterated India's commitment to providing humanitarian aid, noting the delivery of 70 tonnes of disaster relief materials, including medicines and medical supplies, to Palestine. India continues to actively participate as a Member of the Advisory Commission of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In a related development, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will host a virtual BRICS Extraordinary Joint Meeting, bringing together leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to participate in the meeting.

The focus will be on the situation in the Middle East, with a joint statement on the Gaza situation expected to be adopted during the meeting. The virtual Extraordinary Meeting will include leaders from BRICS nations and invited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, according to a press statement.
