According to a list of the most powerful passports in the world for 2024, the Indian passport came in at number 80, allowing its holders to visit 62 countries visa-free. The nation and Uzbekistan are ranked the same, while Pakistan, a neighboring country, is ranked 101st.

For the past five years, Singapore and Japan have held the title of having the most powerful travel documents in the world, enabling their people to enter more countries than anybody else without a prior visa.

But this year has seen a shift, with 4 European nations overtaking those Asian countries to share the top rank on the Henley Passport Index 2024. There are currently 194 out of 227 places that require no visa for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, and Spain—three more than the previous year.

With access to 193 venues, South Korea, Sweden, and Finland all moved up one rank to share second place. According to Bloomberg, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands tied for third place, permitting travel to 192 places.

The United Arab Emirates, which jumped to 11th rank and provides visa-free entry to 183 destinations, has been the quickest climber during the past 10 years. And China, which moved up two places to take the 62nd position this year, can travel to 85 locations without a visa, about twice as many as it could 10 years ago.

Although there has been a general trend over the years toward more travel flexibility, Dr. Christian Kaelin, chairman of immigration consultant Henley & Partners, noted that the difference between individuals at either end of the list was wider than ever.

From 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024, the average number of places visitors can visit without a visa has almost doubled. But as we start the New Year, the top-ranked nations may visit an astounding 166 more locations without a visa than Afghanistan, which is at the bottom of the list with access to only 28 nations, he said.
