A controversy has erupted in Karnataka regarding tickets for IPL matches. BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar has flatly refused to accept the tickets being distributed to legislators, labeling the practice as "VIP culture." The controversy stems from a recent announcement by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, stating that the Karnataka State Cricket Association would provide two tickets for IPL matches to every legislator.

According to the news agency PTI, following this decision, Suresh Kumar wrote a letter to Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, formally declining the tickets. He stated, "Acting on my own conscience, I will not accept any IPL ticket or pass; therefore, no ticket should be issued in my name." Taking aim at the state government, he remarked that a government which claims to be socialist is, in fact, promoting "VIP culture." He further added that it is unfortunate that the Assembly is discussing tickets and perks instead of addressing issues concerning the common public.

Responding to the issue, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that anyone who does not wish to have a ticket need not accept one; however, those who wish to watch the match are free to attend. He also pointed out that legislators have historically received tickets in the past; the only change this time is that the quota has been increased to two tickets per legislator.

The matches are being played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

It is worth noting that the 2026 IPL season kicked off in Bengaluru, where the opening match was played between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Suresh Kumar also alluded to a tragic incident that occurred last year, in which 11 people lost their lives in a stampede outside the stadium during celebrations following an RCB victory.

He stated that after having expressed regret over that incident, the current discussion regarding tickets for that very IPL is now damaging the public image of the politicians involved. He concluded by saying that if politicians continue to promote a "VIP culture," their standing in the eyes of the common people will only diminish further.
