Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Deadly Bombing in the Philippines
In a tragic turn of events, Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for a fatal bombing during a Catholic Mass in the Philippines on Sunday. The devastating attack, which took place in a university gymnasium in Marawi, a city previously besieged by Islamist militants for five months in 2017, resulted in the loss of at least four lives and left 50 others injured.
The Islamic State group, known for its influence in the southern regions of the Philippines, asserted on Telegram that its members were behind the detonation of the bomb. Before the Islamic State claimed responsibility, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr strongly condemned the "senseless and most heinous acts perpetrated by foreign terrorists." In response to the incident, security measures were heightened by the police and military in the country's southern areas and around the capital, Manila.
Pope Francis, in Rome, offered prayers for the victims during his Sunday address. In a separate written message, he appealed to "Christ the prince of peace to grant strength to all to turn away from violence and overcome every evil with good." Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, in a press conference, assured that law enforcement operations to bring the perpetrators of this "terrorist activity" to justice would "continue unabated."
Indicating a potential foreign involvement, Teodoro mentioned "strong indications of a foreign element" in the bombing. However, he refrained from providing further details to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation. Senior police official Emmanuel Peralta disclosed that fragments of a 60-mm mortar were recovered at the scene, underscoring the sophistication and potential planning behind the tragic incident.
