What is a cloudburst?

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), 10 cm or more rain in an hour in a small area is called cloudburst. This phenomenon often occurs in hilly areas. When the moisture-laden winds of monsoon collide with the mountains and rise up, they cool down and form dense clouds.

When the weight of water in them becomes unbearable, it suddenly falls in the form of heavy rain. This sudden rain creates conditions like flash floods, landslides and mudflows within minutes. Scientists believe that due to climate change, both the number and intensity of such incidents are increasing.

Clouds have burst in many places earlier too

Let us tell you that on August 14, 65 people, mostly pilgrims, were killed and more than 100 were injured due to cloudburst in Chisoti. Three days later, seven people including five children died and many others were injured in a flash flood in Kathua district, while on Tuesday, 34 pilgrims dead in landslide on the Vaishno Devi route in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
